2023: Sen. Adeyemi Wants Muslim-Muslim Ticket Ban

On Sunday, Smart Adeyemi, a senator from Kogi West, spoke out against the Muslim-Muslim ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC), warning that a repetition of this occurrence might tear the fabric of the country asunder.

Adeyemi, speaking to reporters in Abuja, said he supports Bola Tinubu and Kashim Shettima for president, not because they are APC members, but rather because he is familiar with them, their histories, and accomplishments.

Adeyemi, who supported the Muslim-Muslim ticket issue raised by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), stated that the group made some valid points. She continued, “There have been oversights in key appointments in the past, which tend to keep the Christians at a disadvantage and this has caused apprehension amongst us.”

He emphasized that the nation’s peace and unity are sacred, urging the administration to address problems in a way that won’t undermine it or threaten its stability.

The congressman continued by saying that the nation’s diversity needed to be balanced and that doing so was essential for maintaining unity. And because of this, I’m putting out some ideas. I’ve talked with the Senate leadership, my party’s leadership, and a good number of senators.

“The remedy I hereby suggest, in order to avoid finding ourselves in a similar circumstance in the future, is that the electoral act be amended as follows: the amendment of Section 84 of the electoral act 2022 by inserting a new sub-section (3) that no political party shall nominate candidates of the same religion as presidential candidates or vice-presidential candidates following this dispensation.

“I now propose the addition of a new subsection 3 to Section 84 of the Electoral Act of 2022.” When this is resolved, it will act as a warning against any oversight similar to this in the future since further incidences will be seen as silent policies that have the potential to tear the fabric of the country apart.

Adeyemi lambasted the Upper Chamber for failing to stop APC efforts to run a Muslim-Muslim ticket for president in 2023.

The legislator said that “a major oversight” was made by the Upper Chamber when the Electoral Act was amended.

Adeyemi claimed that because the upper chamber’s failure provided the APC with the option to make this choice, the Senate will introduce a new subsection to Section 82 (14) of the Electoral Act 2022 to forbid a repetition of this action in future elections.

“We need to have changed the Electoral Act to bar candidates from the same religion from running. We made a terrible mistake. But I’m putting out a Bill to stop it from happening again in elections after 2023,” he stated.

Regarding his backing of Tinubu and Shettima, Adeyemi said, “I have had the opportunity of getting to know the candidates personally before now, and my support for them as people is not predicated on the fact that they are APC members or because they are Muslims as I am a Christian myself. It is simply based on what I know about them personally, as well as their prior accomplishments and backgrounds.

“The second challenge confronting our nation today is the issue of the poor state of our economy, the inexplicably low exchange rate, the need for the consolidation of economic diversification, and improving on the accomplishments of the current administration on infrastructural facilities such as roads, rail lines, and aviation,” Adeyemi lamented the dire state of the country. According to independent report.
