The governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom, has urged the All Progressive Congress, APC-led federal government to hold the general election in 2019 with greater seriousness.

During a working visit to the International Republican Institute (IRI) in Washington on Wednesday, September 7th, 2022, the governor made this statement.

Governor Ortom, who was welcomed at the institute by Gregory Kearns, Director of the Africa Division, and Jenai Cox, Deputy Director of the Africa Division, stated that there are numerous signs that the ruling party is meddling with the electoral body functions.

He stated that Nigerians are concerned since some of the electoral body actions haven’t fully proven their independence.

Rev. Peters Ichull, the Governor’s Principal Special Assistant on Diaspora Affairs, said the engagement between the Governor and institution leaders was intended to help the group understand the concerns of the opposition and the general public with consideration to the general elections of 2023.

The governor, for instance, made the point that the unrest in the nation may be used as a justification to extend the rule of the ruling party in places where sizable communities have been wiped off or driven from their ancestral lands and replaced by bandits.

Governor Ortom added that it was troubling that INEC was inconsistent with regard to electronic transmission of polls.

The Governor added, “The umpire appears to alter the goalpost to accommodate the ruling party’s sloppiness in maintaining its ostensibly rigorous timeline deadlines,” which is cause for concern.

With these errors that should have been avoided, the governor questioned how the election could be free, fair, and transparent.

He also voiced concern about the APC level of sensitivity and desperation, which was evident in their nomination of a Muslim-Muslim ticket in the face of widespread opposition.

He pointed out that it has become obvious that the Buhari administration is not acting in the best interests of Nigeria and her population, laying the stage for instability in 2023 that will have an impact on the entire world.

In order to provide a legitimate election that guarantees peace and defends Nigerian democracy, Governor Ortom charged the international election observers and the world community.

The governor also commended IRI for its tenacious efforts to uphold democracy around the world.

Gregory Kearns, the IRI Director for Africa, commended the Governor for his candid remarks, noting that they are in line with their mission and are reflected in their tactical pre-election report.

As a significant stakeholder, political actor, and well-known individual in Nigeria, Ortom should increase his support for legitimate elections, according to Kearns. According to independent report.
