A 21-year-old orphan, Ibrahim Sarafa, has been diagnosed with a stroke and is seeking the help of Nigerians for his treatment.

PUNCH Metro gathered that Sarafa left his village in Ibadan after his father died and went to Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, where he had been working as a house help for two years.

He later returned to Ibadan to start selling metal scraps to feed himself while he slept under the Mokola Bridge.

Speaking with our correspondent, Sarafa said he was sleeping under the bridge when a night guard accused him of breaking into a shop.

Thereafter, Sarafa said he was arrested by the police and taken into custody.

“The police beat me up until I could not stand on my feet. I was carried to their office and was detained and beaten for a month,” Sarafa said.

Sarafa said he was later transferred to the State Criminal Investigations Department, Iyaganku, Oyo State, where he spent two months in detention.

PUNCH Metro gathered that a non-governmental organisation, Center for Justice, Mercy, and Reconciliation intervened in Sarafa’s condition,

The NGO’s Coordinator, Ezekiah Olujobi, said Sarafa was not prosecuted since he was arrested in 2018.

He said, “We discovered that he had no parents. He was alleged of armed robbery without any evidence or confessional statement. He was remanded from 2018 until his health deteriorated.”

Our correspondent gathered that the court granted Sarafa unconditional release on health grounds and he had since been admitted in the Jubilee Hospital.

A matron of the hospital, Oyelade Abiola, told our correspondent that Sarafa needed money for his treatment.
