The Adamawa State Ministry of Health says it has recorded 104 suspected cases of cholera disease in Guyuk and Shelleng Local Government areas of the state.

The ministry also stated that as of September 4, 2022, there have been two deaths recorded in both LGAs of the state, with a case fatality ratio of 1.9.

This information was contained in a recent 2022 Cholera Outbreak Situation Report issued by the States Ministry of Health.

Of the two confirmed deaths, the ministry said one was recorded from Guyuk while the other death was from Shelleng.

Cholera is an acute diarrhoeal disease caused by Vibrio cholerae, a gramme-negative rod-shaped bacterium. It is a potentially life-threatening, primarily waterborne disease.

It is usually spread through contaminated water and causes severe diarrhoea and dehydration.

According to the ministry, on August 15, 2022, it received upsurge of reports of increasing suspected cases of acute watery diarrhoea from the affected LGAs.

The report read, “Upsurge of acute watery diarrhoea were reported from 2 LGAs (Guyuk and Shelleng) on 15th August 2022.

“Samples were screened with nine Rapid Diagnostic Test positives and two Polymerase Chain Reaction confirmed positive.

“One hundred and four (104) suspected cases have been line-listed from the two LGAs with 2 deaths.

“Period of reporting is 20th April to 4th September 2022,” it said.

The ministry further stated that the establishment of hygiene promotion activities is currently in progress and is fully supported by the world health organisation.

It also advised that chlorination of contaminated water points should be intensified and called on partners willing to build public latrines and construct boreholes.
