Andy Ruiz sent Luis Ortiz crashing to the canvas three times, twice in the second round, and once in the 7th round, on his way to winning a unanimous points decision over the Cuban boxer Sunday night. The Judges had the scores 114-111, 114-111, and113-112 in favor of the Mexican-American heavyweight.

Sunday night’s WBC title eliminator in California was the 32-year-old Mexican’s first fight after beating Chris Arreola by unanimous decision in May 2021.

The latest win which improved his records to 35-2 (22 KOs), brings the hard-punching American heavyweight closer to another World title chance.

Speaking to Fox Sports shortly after the fight, Andy Ruiz called out Deontay Wilder who was in attendance at the fight with these words: “If Deontay Wilder wins in October, I and him are with the same management and we can make this fight happen, let’s get it on. I want to be a champion again and bring that belt back to Mexico!”

Deontay Wilder was amenable to Ruiz’s challenge to fight him next and had responded to the challenge thus: “Deontay Wilder is back and looking for great, exciting fights to give the fans. If that’s what the fans want, let’s do it.”

But first Wilder would have to win his next fight against Robert Helenius on October 15 in New York, which is a comeback fight for the former WBC heavyweight champion, after losing his trilogy against Tyson Fury last year.
