Umar Farouk, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) recently elected president, said yesterday that it was high time for the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to end its current strike and allow students to continue their studies.

To break the impasse, Farouk said he would also approach the government. He claimed to have already begun negotiations with the ASUU leadership to find a long-term solution to the lecturer’s demands.

According to information obtained yesterday, the striking professors won’t receive their Earned Academic Allowance from the N50 billion the federal government has made available until after they have called off their strike.

On February 14, the academics began a one-month warning strike. After the administration allegedly failed to accept their requests, the lecturers turned the strike into an indefinite action.

The NANS president guaranteed that the ongoing misunderstanding between the government and university unions would be permanently resolved during his term in office.
