ASUU: FG Drags Striking Lecturers To Court

[ad_1]

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) had been dragged to the Industrial Court by the Federal government over its lingering strike action which has kept students at home for nearly seven months.

According to Naija News, ASUU has been on strike since February 14th, 2022, to press home its many demands to the Federal Government, which include paying earned allowances and salaries for lecturers, better funding and upkeep for tertiary institutions, the adoption of the University Transparency and Accountability system (UTAS) for salary payment instead of the government’s Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS), and the renegotiation of collective bargaining agreements.

However, several of the discussions between the union and the administration came to a stalemate.

ThisDay was informed on Friday by sources at the federal ministry of labour that the Trade Dispute Department had filed a complaint with the Industrial Arbitration Court in Abuja, and that the hearing would start the following Monday.

The federal government has reportedly filed a complaint at the Industrial Court opposing the university teachers’ ongoing strike, according to the source. The Trade Dispute Act’s Section 17 is met by this.

After meeting at the National University Commission’s office in Abuja on Tuesday, negotiations between the federal government and ASUU ultimately came to a halt.

The federal government had previously stated that it would not sign any additional agreements that it could not carry out.

This meeting of the provosts and vice chancellors of federal universities was announced by the minister of education, Malam Adamu Adamu, and took place in the NUC’s office.
