ASUU gets seven-man committee to counter ‘smear campaign’

The Academic Staff Union (ASUU)has constituted a seven-member committee to address what it called a smear media campaign against the union.

According to the statement, the union’s trustees and chief executive officer decided to form a “quick response committee” to respond right away to various media reports, editorials, and interviews that might be detrimental to the union’s interests.

The union assigned the committee to devise methods to combat the alleged media smear campaign against the union’s decision to prolong its industrial action in a letter of appointment from ASUU President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke.

“ASUU is at a very critical stage of its campaign to ensure the existence of public universities in Nigeria,” the letter states. It has been noted that there is a significant amount of media propaganda being used to misinform and defame the union. The union is grateful for your efforts in addressing this media conflict.

The union’s trustees and chief executive officer “agreed to form a quick reaction committee to reply promptly to various media publications, opinions, interviews, etc. that may be against the union’s interests.”

Three PhDs and four professors make up the committee.

Prof. Ade Adejumo of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology is the convener. Other members include Prof. Joseph A. Ushie of the University of Uyo, Prof. Abdulgafar Amoka of Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, Dr. Adelaja Odukoya of the University of Lagos, Dr. Taiwo Obateru of the University of Jos, Dr. Otu Akanu (AE-FUNAI) as a member.
