ASUU President, Emmanuel Osodeke, Rejects N50m Raised By Berekete Family

The president of ASUU refused to take donation from the Berekete Family of Human Rights Radio. As a result, we were ordered to close the account and refund the full amount to the donor.

Crowdfunding was initiated by Ahmed Isah, CEO of Human Rights Radio Abuja, to help ASUU convince faculty to stop the strike. Emmanuel Osodeke, president of the the Academic Staff Union (ASUU) has rejected an intervention fund from Brekete Family, a reality television and radio show focused on human rights issues, to end the strike.

ASUU called for a month-long warning strike on February 14 to protest the federal government’s failure to act in response to its request.

However, on March 14, the union extended the proceedings for eight weeks because the government did not fully comply with the request.

After that, the union extended the strike for another 12 weeks. Oyereke said the extension was intended to give the government more time to fully resolve the issue. Concerned about the ongoing strike, many celebrities urged ASUU and the government to address this issue.

On Saturday morning, Osedeke and his team were invited to a radio show by their presenter, Ahmad Isa (commonly known as the Ordinary President), to explain to the Nigerians why the union was still on strike. According to he also Isa also opened a special intervention bank account at TAJ Bank to raise funds for the union and publicly displayed $50 million in cash donated by Udom Emmanuel. Shortly after the funds were issued, President ASUU reportedly expressed his dissatisfaction and declined the offer.
