ASUU Strike: Education Minister Blames Jonathan Govt For Crisis

[ad_1]

Malam Adamu Adamu, the minister of education, has accused President Goodluck Jonathan’s recent administration of signing a contract with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) without intending to carry it out.

On Wednesday night’s episode of Politics Today on Channels Television, the Minister told Nigerians that he would do everything in his power to end the ongoing ASUU strike.

Adamu added that the university strikes are not the fault of the current Muhammadu Buhari administration.

He continued by saying that the federal government would not change its stance on the “no work, no pay” policy and that, should the Union put off the strike today, ASUU will forfeit seven months of compensation.

“The federal government is not revoking its decision on the ‘No Work, No Pay Policy,'” he declared. Let me just approach it holistically: sacrifices are what make the world great, and we respect this union because of the sacrifices it is making. However, a sacrifice cannot be made without cost.

So, if ASUU ends its strike today, they will lose seven months. Government won’t retract, and I don’t think they’ll be motivated by that. We should work together to find a solution to this issue. Government doesn’t, in my opinion, seek to penalize anyone. A teacher’s refusal to make a sacrifice for his students is regrettable, and I find that to be something that does not sit well with me. You cannot possibly count all of the sacrifices made by the federal government. That wasted time will never be made up for by the students. Those who stated they would teach when they returned don’t seem to be able to do so because time has already passed.

The minister said President Muhammadu Buhari felt very awful about the strike while also revealing that his children attend public universities.

However, he asserted that Buhari will leave a significant legacy in the field of education.

“President Buhari will leave behind a lot of legacies. No government in recent memory has provided access to colleges or higher education for Nigerians, and I think this is one of the biggest legacies of the Buhari administration, he added.

In order to put a stop to the strike, he assured them that he would meet with the ASUU president.

Greetings, Nigerians “I don’t have the words to tell the nation the way I feel, but I will do the best that I can to end it,” the Minister assured. “I sit here promising you that I will do the best I can to see that the ASUU strike is off. Even without making this pledge to you, my intention is to meet the president of ASUU immediately after this interview. It is not going to be a social visit; it is in continuation of what we have been doing.
