ASUU Strike: I’m In emotional strife, Says Education Minister

[ad_1]

Malam Adamu Adamu, the minister of education, claimed that the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities(ASUU) has put him through a dark period of personal suffering and emotional strife.

At a meeting with vice chancellors and pro chancellors of federal universities held on Tuesday at the National Universities Commission (NUC) headquarters in Abuja, the minister made this statement.

According to Adamu, the federal government has done everything it can to address the ASUU strike, and the purpose of the meeting was to discuss the specifics of what has been done and what needs to be done.

The limited resources available to address all of the citizenry’s problems, he claimed, have been the biggest obstacle to meeting ASUU’s objectives.

From my perspective, this is the place I would have like us to be in following an amicable resolution of all the concerns raised by the 2009 Agreements. It looks that we are moving the negotiations ahead of schedule, but not for the proper reasons. ASUU’s president reportedly declared that the union will no longer engage in negotiations with the present federal government.

Together, we must keep working to get our public colleges back to where they were in the 1960s and 1970s. Vice-Chancellors and Pro-Chancellors must show more dedication to ending the continuing strike because they are the most significant officials in our university system.

As chairs of Councils and Senates, the highest academic and policy organizations in the system, you must regard it as your overriding responsibility to advance laws and practices that will deter labor disputes on our campuses. Government funding for university construction and academic advancement will continue.

All university workers, academic and non-teaching, will continue to have their working circumstances reassuringly improved by the government. The biggest issue, as you are well aware, is the lack of resources to handle all of the public issues. We appreciate your assistance, tolerance, and sacrifices.

According to LEADERSHIP, ASUU started a strike on February 14, 2022, as a result of what the union perceived as the federal government’s refusal to comply with its demands.
