ASUU Strike: Universities Should Close Themselves Down And Come Together – Professor Wole Soyinka

The strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) that has kept several students at home for over six months is becoming worrisome, as students who are supposed to graduate would lag behind their counterparts in other higher institutions of learning.

During an interview with the Vanguard Newspaper, Nobel Laureate Professor Wole Soyinka reacted to the lingering strike. In his words, he said, “Universities, close yourselves down. Come together for a massive congregation. Close yourselves down for a year and have a congregation made up of faculty, student representatives, workers, stakeholders, and others in which we define what we understand by university. Given the current circumstances, we define our vision of what a university should be. Then we agree on a set of university laws that will be generated from within the university, not dictated from outside, so that it becomes our own thing. “We create a new adaptive culture, a university collegial spirit.”

Soyinka noted that he has proposed the aforementioned solution since the regime of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida but received a backlash with people saying he was speaking for the government.

In addition, the Nobel Laureate stated that several people have impersonated him on social media. He noted that the Third World War would be started by social media.

What do you think about Prof. Soyinka’s suggestion?
