The Nigerian Medical Association has called for an extension of the retirement age of doctors, noting that it could be an immediate response to the problem of brain drain in the health sector.

The President of NMA, Dr. Uche Ojinmah, made the call while speaking at the 2022 National Conference of the group held in Gombe, themed ‘Healthcare Delivery in the Face of Insecurity’.

According to the NMA boss, while extending the service years of medical experts available could be a temporary measure, other measures geared towards improving the condition and security of doctors are still necessary but may, however, be a long-term solution,

He said, “While we appreciate that the Government has realised the challenge of the ongoing brain drain, upward extension of retirement age of Nigerian Doctors is one of the easiest ways of retaining some useful service while we are trying to sort out the issue of brain drain.

“Call on the government to quickly expedite the process to get an extension of retirement age fast for doctors.”

Ojinmah added that over 1,525 persons have so far benefitted from its medical outreaches, he stressed that the Association identified the challenge of poor infrastructure especially obsolete equipment across facilities.

“1,525 patients benefitted from our outreaches in various medical conditions, and they were offered free medical consultations, free laboratory tests minor and major surgical procedures.

“Nigerian Government should quickly intervene to save Nigerians and also make it easy for people to move around and do their business and address the problem of the high flight cost. The ticket fee should be brought down.

“In every part of Nigeria, poor infrastructure, insufficient and obsolete equipment inadequate manpower, and insecurity are major threats affecting health care delivery in the country,” Ojinmah said, noting that the government should address the challenge.
