The 26th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), which began on June 20 and will go through June 26, will be attended by President Muhammadu Buhari. He will depart Nigeria on Wednesday for Rwanda.

Buhari will “join other leaders to participate in discussions focused on the progress and prosperity of the more than 2 billion people living in the 54 independent countries in Africa, Asia, the Americas, Europe, and the Pacific that make up the Commonwealth,” according to a statement by Femi Adesina, the president’s special adviser for media and publicity.

The president’s spokesman said in a statement titled “President Buhari to Attend CHOGM 2022 in Kigali, Rwanda” that Buhari will attend the ceremonial opening ceremony on June 24 as well as the high-level meetings of Heads of State and Government on June 24 and 25.

The Commonwealth Charter, which emphasises democracy, human rights, and the rule of law as well as economic opportunities and sustainable development, will be the focus of the CHOGM 2022, which will have as its theme “Delivering a Common Future: Connecting, Innovating, Transforming,” according to the statement.

It further stated that a number of contemporary topics, such as the post-COVID-19 economic recovery, debt sustainability, climate change, poverty reduction, youth entrepreneurship and employment, trade, and food security, are scheduled to be discussed by the Commonwealth leaders.

The Nigerian delegation, which was composed of representatives from public, private, and youth organisations, had already taken part in four forums on youth, women, business, and civil society. It would also attend ministerial meetings and a number of side activities.

“President Buhari is also anticipated to meet privately with a few Commonwealth leaders.

In an article that appeared in The Telegraph, London, President Buhari stressed that the Commonwealth can become a true global power with improved collaborations on trade and security, lending weight to each other in international bodies, ahead of the biennial meeting, which was scheduled to take place in June 2020 but was delayed twice due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama; Finance, Budget, and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed; Health, Osagie Ehanire; Environment, Mohammed Abdullahi; and Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Ali Pantami; will accompany the President.

The National Security Advisor, Maj. Gen. Babagana Monguno (ret. ), the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Ahmed Rufa’i Abubakar, and the Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NidCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, are also members of the President’s entourage.

On Sunday, June 26, 2022, the President will return to the nation, according to Adesina.
