Buhari’s performance may affect Tinubu’s chances – MBF, CSOs

The Middle Belt Forum has said the presidential standard bearer of the ruling All Progressives Congress may find it difficult to convince Nigerians to vote for him in the forthcoming general election due to the poor performance of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.).

Buhari had said during his recent visit to Imo State that his regime had done “extremely well”, considering the limited resources available to it, noting that he deserved some accolades from Nigerians.

The President also gave kudos to his government for ‘dislodging Boko Haram terrorists in the North-East and tackling infrastructural decay which he said he inherited from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party’s administration in 2015.

Reacting, the MBF President, Dr Bitrus Pogu, who described Buhari’s statement as laughable and ill-informed, said it seemed the President might have “lost touch with the reality of the state of the nation” for making such a statement.

Pogu also noted that the performance of the President had dented the image of the APC and reduced the chances of the party’s candidate in the forthcoming election.

In an interview with Saturday PUNCH, Pogu said, “The APC as a party has been dented by the performance of the President. So, people must think twice before they vote. They cannot be hoodwinked thrice. They may have done it twice, but certainly not in 2023.

“Buhari’s statement that he has done well is laughable. Maybe, his lieutenants are misinforming him. Every Nigerian out there knows the situation. Before he came, it was just a North-East affair.

“Today, it is a countrywide affair. People were not being kidnapped for ransom on such a large scale then. Today, we have seen bandits take over towns and villages in this country.

“He may be shielded by his lieutenants; so, he doesn’t know the true position of things. In every consideration – economy, security, health, education – things are worst than they ever have been. He is ill-informed of the happenings in Nigeria.

“When he came in, a dollar was around N198 or so; today, it around N710 and counting. Everyone can clearly see he is not in touch with reality. He should leave that misinformed position and come to the real world.

“Even the core APC members will think twice before voting that party to power again in 2023. Those who supported Buhari before will not do that for the APC candidate and this is unfortunate. Nigerians are not a bunch of fools,” he noted.

Also speaking, the Executive Director of Adopt a Goal Initiative, Mr Atoye Ariyo-Dare, told our correspondent that Tinubu would only enjoy the sentiments of the people and a possibility of vote-buying.

“Outside these two factors, Tinubu may not be able to win the 2023 elections,” he noted.
