Champions League: Check All The Records That Were Made After Matchday 1

[ad_1]

The biggest football stage is Europe, the UEFA Champions League got underway this season on September 6, Tuesday, 2022. Just as we all know, the game is all about breaking records and setting new bounds. This year’s edition of the tournament is no different, just after Matchday 1, a couple of records have already been broken and new ones have been set.

I will center the records broken in the UCL’s opening week to just three players, the players in the name of Erling Braut Haaland, Kylian Mbappe and Robert Lewandowski.

Erling Braut Haaland: Following a move from Dortmund to Manchester City in the summer of the transfer window this season, his future at the Qatari owner club was at first in doubt after a rather quiet debut against Liverpool in the Community Shield where they lost 3-1. Since he had a proper EPL debut against West Ham, he netted two to open his goalscoring account and has then gone to notch up ten goals for Machester City in the Premier League and also two goals in his first game in Champions League with Man City, making him the youngest player in the UCL to reach 25 goals in the tournament 22yrs 80days (a record that was previously held by Kylian Mbappe, 22years and 208days).

Kylian Mbappe: The French giants squared off against Italy’s heavyweight Juventus at the Pac des Princes to kickstart their campaign in the UCL. Following a rather controversial start to the season in the league with Mbappe and Neymar, the two linked up to produce a goal in the first five minutes of the game against Juventus. It took just about fifteen minutes before Mbappe doubled their lead when he combined with Achraf Hakimi in a stellar one-two play. His two goals made him the youngest player to reach 35 goals in the tournament (a record previously held by Lionel Messi).

Robert Lewandowski: Barcelona’s Camp Nou was all light up on Wednesday when Roberto Lewandowski scored an hatrick against Czech Republic side, Victoria Plzen in a 5-1 win over them. Lewandowski’s hatrick broke a couple of personal records for him and also for Barcelona. The records he set for himself were:

1. He became the competition’s outright third highest goalscorer in the history with 89 goals trailing behind Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

2. He became the only in the tournament’s history to have more G/A than the number of games he has played (108 G/A in 107 games).

3. He became the first player in the competition’s history to score an hatrick for three different clubs (Barcelona, Bayern and Dortmund).

The records he broke for the club are:

1. The first hatrick in the Camp Nou since Messi against Leganes in 2020.

2. The first hatrick in the Camp Nou in the Champions League since Messi against PSV Eindhoven in 2018.

These three guys were the player to watch in the Champions League’s opening games.
