Chelsea have the 3rd most expensive squad in Europe at the moment, yet they lost to Dinamo Zagreb.

The UEFA Champions League clash between Dinamo Zagreb and Chelsea Football Club was nothing but a disaster for Chelsea, especially after they were pipped 1-0 by the hosts. Interestingly, Chelsea have one of the most expensive squads in the whole of Europe; one more reason why losing to Dinamo Zagreb shouldn’t be acceptable. For starters, Chelsea were defeated 1-0 by Dinamo Zagreb in their first UCL match of the season on Tuesday. It took only 13 minutes for the Croatian club to find the net through Mislav Orsic. The rest of the match saw Chelsea struggle to create chances with a lacklustre performance.

I’m saying this because the amount Chelsea have spent this season to strengthen their squad is too astronomical a figure, and to think that they have been battered and decimated by teams that are inferior in quality gives me concern.

How expensive is the Chelsea squad that travelled to Zagreb for the UEFA Champions League tie, compared to Dinamo Zagreb’s squad?

Come to think of it, the Chelsea squad that played on Tuesday night in the Uefa Champions League clash is valued at around €906M, while the Dynamo Zagreb squad has a value of around €3.31M, according to a source online and Brila FM. That’s a difference of around €902.69M; so expensive that one will be forced to think and question the Chelsea Board about their lavish and wasteful ways of spending and how they have approached the transfer market during the summer window.

Then again, Chelsea’s spending and recruitment deserve some questioning now, especially after losing to Zagreb on Tuesday night. Don’t forget Chelsea spent over £170M strengthening their defence when they spent around £33M on Koulibaly, £62M for Cucurella, and around €75M for Fofona. Interestingly, all three of these defenders were on the field on Tuesday and could do little to nothing to prevent Chelsea from losing 1-0.

I find the defeat weird and unacceptable considering the low valuation of the Croatian club, and therefore, I term Chelsea’s spending this summer transfer window wasteful. Maybe it’s too early to judge the squad yet, but with over 3 losses in less than 8 games into the 2022-23 season, being the 3rd most expensive squad in the whole of Europe and the world at large, this result to me is unacceptable.
