Chelsea lost their first Champions League game of the season against Dinamo Zagreb. The Croatian champions recorded a shock 1:0 win over Thomas Tuchel’s side at the Stadion Maksimir.

However, this is not the first time the Blues suffered a defeat in their first Champions League game in group stages.

The last time Chelsea lost their UCL opener was during the 2019/20 season in Group H. The Blues lost 1:0 to Valencia under the tutelage of Frank Lampard.

Valencia took the lead through Rodrigo in the 74th minutes and Chelsea could have scored a late equalizer after Fikayo Tomori’s header hit Wass’s arm in the box but Ross Barkley failed to convert his spotkick.

However, despite losing their first game, Chelsea finished second with 11 points same number points with Valencia while Ajax and Lille occupied the third and fourth spots.

The Blues then crashed out of the competition in round of 16 when they faced eventual winners, Bayern Munich. The Bundesliga side won 7-1 on aggregate.
