Chelsea’s owners fired Tuchel, displaying their ruthlessness.

The harsh firing of manager Thomas Tuchel demonstrates that the change in ownership has not ushered in a time of patience at Stamford Bridge, although Chelsea is still getting used to life under their new leadership.

The German, who was initially given a contract for only 18 months despite his experience, was fully aware of the fate that awaits managers who falter from the moment he arrived at the Premier League club. As he was introduced in January 2021, Tuchel asked, “What does it change? “They will fire me regardless if they are not happy with me.”

During Roman Abramovich’s extraordinarily prosperous rule, which came to an end in May with Todd Boehly’s consortium taking control, a hire-and-fire culture developed. After winning the Champions League in May 2021, just four months after taking over a team that had struggled under Frank Lampard, Tuchel secured a two-year contract extension. But following a busy transfer window at Stamford Bridge and fewer than 16 months since Chelsea defeated Manchester City in Porto, he is now without a job.

In May, after Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich revealed he was selling the team immediately after Russia invaded Ukraine, Boehly’s consortium paid a record-breaking £4.25 billion to purchase Chelsea. The UK government imposed sanctions on Abramovich the next week after claiming that he belonged to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s inner circle.

Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Koulibaly, Marc Cucurella, Wesley Fofana, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang are just a few of the high-profile players that the new administration lavished more than £200 million on. Furthermore, Tuchel seemed to have gained the new owners’ respect.

Following their time together at Borussia Dortmund, he lobbied for the recruitment of Aubameyang and is said to have quenched Boehly’s interest in signing Cristiano Ronaldo, who was looking to leave Manchester United.

However, the 49-year-old has already been fired after three costly losses to Leeds, Southampton, and Dinamo Zagreb, just seven games into the new campaign. Results have declined following a strong start, similar to his stint at Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain.

Despite the challenges brought on by the fines placed on Abramovich, which had an impact on the club’s operations, Chelsea won the Club World Cup, advanced to two domestic cup finals, and finished in the top four of the Premier League last season. Romelu Lukaku was signed for a club record £97 million, but the anticipated Premier League title push never materialized.

Lukaku was loaned back to Inter Milan after publicly complaining that he had trouble adjusting to Tuchel’s favored system at great expense to the Blues. Recent reports indicated that other attacking players were dissatisfied with Tuchel’s tactics and angry that they were not allowed to excel.

Timo Werner returned to RB Leipzig last month, while Kai Havertz, Christian Pulisic, and Hakim Ziyech have all struggled to live up to their high transfer costs. The inability to score goals has persisted, and this season’s defense has lacked the resoluteness that marked Tuchel’s early success at the club. They can refer to N’Golo Kante’s unexpected injury, Edouard Mendy’s decline in form, and the need for time for the club’s recruits to adjust as reasons.

But as the strain mounted, his behavior had become more erratic. In a 2-2 draw with Tottenham manager Antonio Conte last month, he was dismissed for two physical altercations and berated his players for having a “soft attitude” when they lost at Southampton. The final straw was a lopsided 1-0 loss on Tuesday to a Zagreb team with an alarmingly low Champions League record. After the game, Tuchel stated, “We are not where we need to be and where we can be.”

Boehly made the audacious declaration that the issue was a man who, in the last three seasons, has played for two different clubs and advanced to two Champions League finals. The American is under pressure right now to make the best hire so that his investment pays off on the field.
