Commercial activities were once again grounded in the cities of Onitsha, Nnewi and Ekwulobia in Anambra State on Tuesday, as there was over 70 per cent compliance with the sit-at-home order declared by the Indigenous People of Biafra.

Banks, markets, filling stations, motor parks and offices were shut while roads in the areas were devoid of the usual vehicular movements and pedestrians.

Although in Awka, it was partial compliance as more vehicular movements were witnessed.

It was observed that most workers who live in Awka reported for their official duties.

IPOB had declared a sit-at-home across the South-East on Tuesday in solidarity with the court appearance of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, in Abuja and to also protest the visit of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), to Imo State.

Our correspondent, who went round major streets, observed that shops in the residential areas also opened partially for business transactions, while some of the residents gathered in groups, discussing matters of interest.

It was a mixed reaction while some of the Onitsha residents expressed concern about the economic effect and implications of the continuous exercise, others lauded the move.

The Chairman of the Mgbaruo Residents Association, Onitsha, Chief Sylvanus Okeke, said, “Although by this sit-at-home, we are losing the money we would have made today if we were allowed to go to our various business premises, we were at home on Monday and again on Tuesday, but there is nothing we can do. It is better to be safe and alive at home than to go and face the unknown.”

Also, major streets in Enugu metropolis were deserted.

All banks, markets, shops and other public offices were shut down.

Residents, most of whom were too afraid, remained indoors; trying to observe the situation despite assurances from state security forces asking them to go about their duties.
