The Gombe State Deputy Governor, Dr. Manassah Jatau, has charged the Nigerian Association of Nephrology Nurses with undertaking more research on diseases affecting the kidney, noting that such studies are necessary to curb the spread of the disease.

The Deputy Governor represented the Governor, Muhammadu Yahaya, at the Association’s 15th Annual Scientific Conference organised in collaboration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria.

Yahaya noted that there is a compelling need for the Association to strengthen and widen its tentacles by massively educating the public on the prevention, causes, symptoms, effects, and treatment of kidney disease while other medical personnel address other vital organs of the body.

He revealed that available records suggest that 20 million Nigerians are living with kidney disease, while about 10,000 of the number are at the End Stage of Kidney Disease annually.

The governor said, “This being the case there is a very urgent and compelling need for your association to strengthen and widen your tentacles by massively educating the population on the prevention, causes, symptoms, effects, and treatment of kidney disease, while other medical personnel address other vital organs of the body.

“Let me observe that there is every need for your members to have a broader understanding of the social world of patients, health, illness, and health care to complement your technical and clinical competencies.

“This is not really a very tall order since one of the sub-themes of this five-day Conference is “Multi-Disciplinary Care of Renal Patient”. Knowing very well also that Leadership is a language I advise that you can achieve very much by choosing your words more wisely in society as you attempt to educate on everything about the kidney.

“This is for comprehension and acceptability of those you approach to get their buy-in and participation.”

Speaking earlier, National Chairman, Nigerian Association of Nephrology Nurses, Mrs. Ajibike Omolola, explained that the conference theme: Modern Trends in Nephrology Nursing was carefully selected following emerging issues.

Omolola said, “The conference is centered on knowledge sharing among practitioners on an improved approach to the delivery of quality health care to patients. Since the beginning of this tenure, we have been constrained to organise a physical conference because of COVID-19 and security challenges in the country.

“During this era, the Association in conjunction with some companies organised virtual conferences to keep members abreast of discoveries in renal care and to give our patients the best care available globally.”

According to her, there are four accredited Nephrology schools in Nigeria; Abuja, Jos, Kano, and Ilorin, adding that the association was currently engaging stakeholders to open more schools in other locations.
