For his outstanding start to the season for Manchester United, Diogo Dalot has garnered a lot of praise; but, Cristiano Ronaldo has now given him a new moniker.
Since Ronaldo returned to Old Trafford last year, the Portuguese colleagues, along with Bruno Fernandes, who play together for club and country, have developed a strong bond. Dalot, however, has had the more noteworthy season thus far after compiling a string of excellent Premier League showings. The 23-year-old right back posted a photo of himself in training on Instagram. Cristiano Ronaldo replied, calling him a “piteusinho,” which roughly translates to “little pittie,” in anticipation of starting his Europa League campaign against Real Sociedad on Thursday.
Although there is no English word for “pittie,” it has been speculated that it roughly translates to “small bulldog.” This is undoubtedly a different accolade than the ones Dalot is used to receiving on his football skills. After acquiring him from Porto for £19 million four years ago, Jose Mourinho predicted that he would become the new Gary Neville, and it now appears as though he is living up to that forecast.
Ralf Rangnick favored him above Aaron Wan-Bissaka last season owing to his superior attacking performance after three seasons of trying to persuade Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had failed. Erik ten Hag, the new United manager, is growing fond of the Portugal international now that he is in charge. Even Antony, whose goal against Arsenal on Sunday excited supporters, has given him an £85 million boost on the right flank. Dalot expressed his excitement for the full-back-and-winger combination prior to Thursday’s Europa League match.
