Segun Oni, a former governor and member of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), suffered another defeat on Thursday when the elections petition tribunal validated Biodun Oyebanji’s victory in the June 18 governorship race.

Oyebanji was proclaimed the winner of the election after receiving 187,057 votes and winning in 15 of the state’s 16 LGAs. Segun Oni of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) placed second with 82,211 votes, and Bisi Kolawole of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) took third with 67,457 votes.

Oni, who was unhappy with the results of the election, filed a petition accusing Oyebanji and the APC of wrongdoing.

The current deputy governor of Ekiti, Monisade Afuye, was accused by the former governor of submitting phoney WAEC results to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Wilfred Kpochi, the Chairman of the three-man panel, who read the judgement, dismissed Oni’s petition.

Kpochi said the petition failed to prove the allegations against the respondents.

He said: “The validity of the certificate or qualification of the 5th respondent (Afuye) remains unhurt. The petitioners have been unable to prove that she presented a forged certificate.

“We dismiss the issue of corrupt practices in the election. The appellants did not call any witness from any polling unit or ward”, he added.
