Prince Charles Becomes New UK King

Prince Charles has been declared the King of the United Kingdom following the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, and accedes to the throne as King Charles III.

The Queen, Britain’s longest-reigning sovereign and the world’s oldest monarch, passed away at the age of 96 on Thursday after suffering from what Buckingham Palace has called “episodic mobility problems” which started last year.

Prior to his emergence, Charles, who is the first son of the deceased female monarch, was the heir to the British throne.

The former Prince of Wales who succeeded his mother without ceremony will still undertake some traditional procedures to be crowned King.

King Charles is 73 years old and was born at Buckingham Palace on November 14, 1948. After being named the Prince of Wales in 1969, Charles went on to train with the Royal Air Force as a pilot in 1971.

He has held substantive ranks in the Armed Forces of a number of countries since he was made a flight lieutenant in the Royal Air Force in 1972. His first honorary appointment in the Armed Forces was as Colonel-in-Chief of the Royal Regiment of Wales in 1969; since then, he has also been decorated with several military honorary titles.

On 16 June 2012, the Queen awarded him the highest honorary rank in all three branches of the British Armed Forces, installing him as Admiral of the Fleet, Field Marshal and Marshal of the Royal Air Force.

In September 1971, after the passing out parade at Cranwell, The Prince embarked on a naval career, following in the footsteps of his father, grandfather and both his great-grandfathers. The six-week course at the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, was followed by service on the guided missile destroyer HMS Norfolk and two frigates.

Yobe North: Senate President, Lawan Faces Fiercest Battle In 23 Years

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, on Thursday, further dashed the hopes of Nigeria’s Senate President, Dr Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan as he seeks a return to the National Assembly in 2023.

DAILY POST reports that Lawan has been locked up in a battle with Bashir Sheriff Machina in his bid to secure a return ticket to represent Yobe North Senatorial district on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.

Lawan, a former Education Officer, who worked in Yobe State Ministry of Education, made foray into politics in 1999 and got elected first into the House of Representatives to represent Bade/Jakusko Federal Constituency of Yobe State on the platform of opposition All Peoples Party (APP). In 2003, he contested to represent Yobe North Senatorial seat and won and since then, the Professor of Remote Sensing has been winning elections seamlessly, particularly after he defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) early 2015.

His attempt to up his political game in 2023, by contesting for presidential primary of the APC has unarguably resulted to the ongoing political battle with another APC chieftain, Bashir Sheriff Machina, with both laying claim to the sole ticket.

Machina is relying on the Yobe North Senatorial primary which was conducted on June 28, a time he said Senator Lawan was contesting for the APC presidential primary, which he lost to Asiwaju Bola Tinubu. Machina scored 289 votes out of 300 delegates that took part in the primary.

Nigeria turned into theatre of bloodshed, anguish by bandits under Buhari: Aregbesola

The Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, has lamented the devastating impacts bandits and other criminal elements terrorising Nigeria have had on the country’s economy and social life under President Muhammadu Buhari’s regime.

According to a statement issued on Thursday, Mr Aregbesola urged operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to be firm but civil in carrying out their responsibilities.

The minister stated this at the inauguration of 93 operational vehicles for the NSCDC in Abuja. He said NSCDC’s presence at all times should show the power and authority of Mr Buhari’s regime to deter criminals.

“The ministry under my watch remains unwavering, resolute and committed towards strengthening the capacity and capabilities of this organ of government to effectively deliver on its mandate,” stated the minister. “Today’s occasion, therefore, is in pursuant of the radical and proactive steps by the federal government towards addressing the challenge of insecurity in the country.

He added, “This is as we take steady and bold steps to degrade the activities of some criminally minded unpatriotic individuals and saboteurs, whose main agenda is to dwarf enormous achievements government has recorded in every sphere of national development. As we are all aware, there are challenges of vandalism of critical national assets, crude oil theft, banditry, kidnapping, ritual killings, insurgency, among others that have become a cankerworm that must be eliminated.”

He declared that the regime would not continue to watch innocent Nigerians constantly harassed, intimidated and cowed while criminals terminate their lives prematurely.

“The incessant attacks on our critical national assets and infrastructure, in particular, has become a grievous wound dangerously bleeding the nation’s economy, which must be effectively addressed,” Mr Aregbesola stressed. “We cannot also pretend to be unaware of the incessant vandalism and theft of our valuable national assets and infrastructure, and our territory turned to a theatre of bloodshed and anguish by bandits.”

He further claimed that Mr Buhari’s regime “have routed these gangs and individuals in all their bases and put them on the run” and added, “We shall not relent but remain absolutely committed towards extirpating them completely from our land.”

Mr Aregbesola advised the NSCDC to issue the vehicles to the best personnel that would conscientiously and effectively use and maintain them, decrying how most federal agencies mishandle and neglect official vehicles and ultimately turn them into disuse within a short period.
