Engineers urge Nigerians to stop patronising quacks

With the increase in the number of collapsed buildings across the country, the Chairman, Nigerian Society of Engineers, Bwari Branch, Halimat Adediran, has urged Nigerians to stop hiring quacks.

She said this during the induction ceremony of new members, awards and dinner night as part of activities for the 2022 Engineering Week, organised by the NSE, Bwari branch, in Abuja.

She further stressed the role of engineers in adding value to the engineering profession, humanity, and national development.

She enjoined all the inductees and awardees to continue to be good ambassadors of the profession.

The PUNCH had reported cases of building collapses in Lagos, Abuja, Kano, and other parts of the country.

On May 1, 2022, a three-storey building collapsed in Lagos, killing 10 persons. Six days after, a two-storey building also in Lagos, crumbled with many persons barely escaping death.

The most recent is the collapse of a seven-storey building in Lagos with at least six persons trapped in the rubble. Earlier, a three-storey building collapsed in Kano.

Also speaking at the programme, the  President and Founder, Human Capital Africa, Dr Obiagheli Ezekwesili, who noted that Africa is suffering a famine of public leadership.

She further stressed the need for political literacy and quality political actors for the desired progress.
