First speech: King Charles III promises lifelong service

In an emotional television address, Prince Charles III, now King Charles, vowed on Friday to follow in the footsteps of his late mother’s long career of service to Britain and the Commonwealth by elevating his heir William to the position of Prince of Wales.

King Charles declared his love for his second estranged younger son Harry and his wife Meghan in his first spoken remark after ascending to the throne following the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II.

The new monarch also stated that he will rely on his lovely wife Camila’s assistance after she becomes queen consort.

Charles stated that he shared the public’s overwhelming sense of loss following the death of his mother at the age of 96 on Thursday, after breaking the record of reigning for 70 years.

“I renew that promise of lifelong service to you all today,” he said.

“As the queen did with such unwavering devotion, I now solemnly pledge myself to uphold the constitutional principles at the heart of our nation for the remainder of the time God grants me.”

Addressing his “darling Mama”, joining his father the late Prince Philip, who died last year, “I want simply to say this: thank you”, the new king said.

“Thank you for your love and devotion to our family and to the family of nations you have served so diligently all these years. May flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.”

As the queen’s heir, Charles was duke of Cornwall and duke of Rothesay in Scotland, titles that passed to William on Thursday.

The highest title bestowed on the heir to the throne, however, was reserved for the monarch to bestow or withhold.

“Today, I am proud to create him prince of Wales, Tywysog Cymru (in Welsh), the country whose title I have had the great honor of bearing for so much of my life and duty,” said Charles.

“I am confident that, with Catherine by his side, our new prince and princess of Wales will continue to inspire and lead our national conversations, bringing the marginal to the center ground where vital assistance can be provided.”

The queen’s state funeral has yet to be confirmed, but it is expected to take place on September 19.

“We will come together as a nation, as a Commonwealth, and indeed as a global community in a little more than a week to lay my beloved mother to rest,” Charles said.

“Let us remember and draw strength from the light of her example in our sorrow,” he said.

“On behalf of my entire family, I can only express my heartfelt gratitude for your condolences and support.”

“They mean more to me than words can express.”
