A radio host from the Philippines who had criticised the previous president Rodrigo Duterte has been shot and killed by assailants close to his home in the Manila suburb of Metro.

According to Las Pinas City police commander Col. Jaime Santos, the journalist, Percival Mabasa, was shot and killed by two gunmen on a motorcycle on his way to work at the radio station DWBL on Monday night.
A press advocacy group in the nation referred to Mabasa’s murder as a bold crime that demonstrated how risky journalism is in the nation.

The media watchdog continued, listing the Philippines as one of the most hazardous countries for journalists.

Mabasa, who was known locally as Percy Lapid, was a fierce critic of Duterte and government officials serving under successor, Mr. Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

“He has been critical of red-tagging, which is accusing someone of being a communist sympathiser, as well as online gambling operations and misinformation around martial law, said the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines,” the group said.
