With just less than 5 months left to the much talked about 2023 general elections in Nigeria, the Dein of Agbor, His Royal Highness (HRH) Benjamin Ikechukwu keagborekuzi 1, has come out to decry the widespread use of foreign currencies in the country’s political landscape.

Speaking during an interview on ARISE NEWS some hours ago, the revered monarch expressed doubts that vote buying would be checkmated in the upcoming elections due to the weaponization of poverty through the widespread use of US Dollars to lure the electorate into selling their precious votes.

Ikechukwu, While discussing the role of traditional rulers in educating their subjects on the importance of shunning monetary offers in exchange for their votes, stated that it will be hard for a monarch to convince his people who have never seen foreign currencies before not to sell their votes. Going further, the Dein of Agbor lamented the profligate use of Dollars for campaigning and electioneering purposes as one of the many reasons why the Naira is on a free fall.

“On the issue of buying of votes, how do you explain it to the electorate? How do you explain to the electorate who haven’t seen Dollars before, that they shouldn’t take Dollars? The ‘dollarization’ of our politics is destroying the nation. It is destroying the economy.

If we want other nations to respect our currency, our Naira, we have to respect it first and foremost. What has the Dollar got to do with our current political situation? I wish the monies being spent were in Naira,” he said.
