INEC bans politicians from visiting its offices in Anambra

by Ebor Cletus Ralph Jr

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Anambra State has prohibited politicians from visiting its offices for as long as voter registration and revalidation processes have been ongoing.

According to reports, the prohibition came about as a result of an incident when Senator Uche Ekwunife, who represents the Anambra Central senatorial zone, visited the INEC state headquarters in Awka and the registrants objected to her speaking to them.

In order to prevent a potential collapse in law and order, Dr. Nkwachukwu Orji, the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Anambra State, gave the order to INEC security men to stop allowing politicians to address the registrants.

In order to observe the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) initiative, Ekwunife, the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) senatorial candidate for Anambra Central in the general elections of 2023, reportedly visited the INEC office.

Ekwunife is rumoured to have provided drinks and snacks to INEC staff members and registrants earlier in an effort to increase support for her campaign among potential senatorial district voters.

Before reportedly veering off to covertly canvass for votes, she was said to have informed them of her efforts to see that INEC brought more voting machines and received cheers from the registrants, who were primarily young people.

However, trouble reportedly began as the senator reportedly urged the sizable group of registrants to vote for PDP in the upcoming election. The crowd reportedly became enraged by this and started to yell at her, forcing her security team to carry her away in her car and take off.

Ekwunife shares a senatorial district with Senator Victor Umeh, her opponent in the upcoming election, and Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s nominee for president, as well as the Anaocha local government area.
