IOC threatens to suspend Guatemala Committee on October 15

The Executive Board agreed on Thursday to disqualify Guatemala Committee if it has not met the criteria required to be in line with the Olympic Charter by then.

The IOC Executive Board, meeting in Lausanne (Switzerland), agreed on Thursday to disqualify the Olympic Committee of Guatemala (COG) as of October 15 if by then it has not complied with the criteria required by the international organization to be in line with the Olympic Charter.

Part of the COG’s statutes were partially suspended last month by the Central American country’s Constitutional Court, following a lawsuit filed by a candidate for the presidency of the sports body.

The IOC director for relations with national committees, the British James Macleod, explained at a press conference that the Executive decided to “give a last chance” to the COG and local authorities to “comply with the Olympic Charter”, regularize the situation and call elections “according to their own statutes”.

Specifically, the IOC demands that the partial suspension of the COG’s statutes be lifted and that the country’s sports legislation guarantee the Committee’s independence.

The international body is aware of a meeting planned in the short term in Guatemala to seek a solution to the conflict. Its conclusions must be reported to the IOC by September 25.
