Is the board to blame for Tuchel’s sacking or the coach himself?

[ad_1]

The sudden sacking of Thomas Tuchel has been difficult for some Chelsea supporters to understand. For a manager who was backed up with enough recruitment this summer, it came as a shock that the German tactician could be fired so soon. Why has this happened, and who exactly is to blame for the swift action? Is it the Chelsea board led by Todd Boehly or Tuchel himself.

There have been reports that the sacking of Tuchel is not really in relation to Chelsea’s Champions League loss to Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday. As a matter of fact, it’s not only about the inconsistent performance of the team under the manager this season. Still, Tuchel is apparently the one responsible for his sacking and not the board.

Tuchel’s failure to adapt to or align with the new board’s managerial style and culture cost him his job. With new owners, things were expected to change at Chelsea. And things changed indeed, as the era of Chelsea’s co-owners, Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali, wanted to build a close relationship within the club. According to reporter Ben Jacobs, Boehly, as the new sporting director, wanted to be in close communication with Tuchel and seek his ideas on new signings.

But Tuchel simply didn’t want to have too many tasks on him. He wanted to focus on football and the success of his team on the pitch. As a result, Chelsea couldn’t sign some players in the transfer window, including Raphinha and Jules Kounde. The involvement of Barcelona’s coach, Xavi Hernandez, aided the signing of those players by the Spanish club, something Tuchel didn’t want to do.

Matt Law of The Telegraph also explained how Boehly wanted to sign Ronaldo but Tuchel was against the move and wouldn’t communicate with the Boehly why he rejected the signing of the Portuguese. Tuchel then reportedly withdrew from the club’s transfer activities. It was Boehly and the board who singlehandedly took care of transfer negotiations and contract renewals.

Additionally, Matt Law reported that some players were not happy with Tuchel about his selection and how he asked them to play in unfavourable positions. This particular report can serve as a reference to Romelu Lukaku’s comment last season in which he claimed to be unhappy about how Tuchel makes him play. There are players who were presumably also not satisfied with their minor roles and unimportance under the German manager. These players include Christian Pulisic and Hakim Ziyech. Actions such as this from Tuchel affected the confidence the team and the board had in him.

It is a surprise that Tuchel’s tenure has come to an unexpected end. The manager was backed in the transfer window with enough signings and seemed to be comfortable at the club. His inability to form a good relationship, however, makes him the one to blame for his sacking, as well as his failure to maintain the trust of his players.
