Labour decries Nigeria’s worsening insecurity after Kuje prison attack

by Ebor Cletus Ralph Jr

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) expressed alarm over the nation’s growing insecurity on Friday.

The union was responding to the raid on the Kuje Correctional Center on Tuesday night by members of the Islamic State for West African Province (ISWAP), which resulted in the release of hundreds of prisoners, including several Boko Haram sect members who were being held there.

The TUC bemoaned the peculiar circumstances under which this year’s celebration was held in the wake of the attack on the correctional facility in a statement released by its president, Quadri Olaleye.

The union urged that everyone must band together in order for the country to address its issues.

The statement read: “The whereabouts of these terrorists are unknown, so there is the tendency that people will be somehow apprehensive while moving around.

“Parks may not be able to open and operate fully and the social interactions which are customary during Eid celebrations will be restricted.”

TUC stressed that the time has come for every Nigerian, especially those in authority, to take responsibility for the development of the country.

“Rather, we all should practise what the Holy Quran teaches and stop living hypocritical lives,” it added.
