Lagos records 201 truck crashes in seven months

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency recorded no fewer than 201 truck and tanker accidents between January and July this year.

Trucks and tankers, according to experts, are causes of major accidents on the highway, especially on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Dr Femi Oke-Osayitolu, made this known in a comprehensive report of recorded incidents for the period.

Forty-five truck and 303 other vehicle accidents were also recorded in the period under review.

There were also 93 fire outbreaks involving buildings and 10 vehicle fires, while 112 trucks broke down and 27 fell on the road in the period.

A total of 973 emergencies were recorded across the state during the period under review, with the Alimosho Local Government Area topping the list with 145 cases. This was closely followed by the Ikeja Local Government Area with 122 cases.

Others are, Oshodi/Isolo (96), Kosofe (84), Apapa (70), Surulere (64), Mushin (61), Ikorodu (58), Shomolu (49), Lagos Island (47), Lagos Mainland (27), Amuwo Odofin (26), Epe (22), Ifako Ijaiye (18), Ojo (18), Eti Osa (15), Ajeromi Ifelodun (11), Ibeju-Lekki (eight), Badagry (two) and parts of Ogun State (five).

In January, there were 165 emergency cases. February saw 155 cases, March (148), April (107), May (160), June (112) and July (126).
