Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson has insisted that Leeds United were naive going into the 2022/23 season without signing a new senior striker at Elland Road despite reports linking Nigeria international Kelechi Iheanacho to the club.
The Peacocks, as they are fondly called, in the recently concluded transfer window lost key attacking players like Raphina, Kalvin Phillips and Daniel James to Barcelona, Manchester City and Fulham, respectively.
Despite the departure of the trio Leeds failed to bring in quality reinforcements with only 18-year-old Italian striker Wilfried Gnonto, who is yet to make his English Premier League debut six games into the season, arriving from FC Zurich on deadline day.
Jesse Marsch on the transfer deadline day tried to bring in Iheanacho from Leicester City but a move for the Super Eagles player failed.
The ex-Whites stopper in a chat with MOT Leeds News admitted Iheanacho would have been a great addition after the Nigerian was linked with the Whites on deadline day.
“I think they were naive going into the rest of the season,” Robinson told MOT Leeds News.
“If Patrick is fit, he plays, but looking behind that, maybe his (head coach Jesse Marsch’s) hand was drawn to play Gelhardt. He’s going until January now with someone whose fitness is touch and go, and young strikers that the manager doesn’t trust 100%.
“Iheanacho would be a great player, a very similar option to Bamford. He can lead from the line and press from the front, Jesse Marsch likes his team to start high up the field and he (Iheanacho) would be good for that.”
So far this season, Leeds have only won two of their six Premier League games and have scored 10 goals while also conceding the same number of goals.
