MNU 0-1 RSD: Two wrong tactical mistakes made by Erik ten Hag that cost Man United the defeat

Dutch tactician and former Ajax Amsterdam manager, Erik ten Hag took charge his first European game for Manchester United yesterday in their Group E opening game of the UEFA Europa League at home against Spanish La Liga Santander giant Real Sociedad at the Old Trafford.

Manchester United prior the game have been enjoying a blistering run of form with a four-game winning streaks after their first two league openers which ended in a disappointing defeat against Brighton and Hove Albion and Brentford respectively.

The host in the game gave a good fighting spirit but were unable to turn around the fortune of the game with the result of the night placing them at the third spot on the table with no point.

With the result of the night, here are two wrong tactical decisions made by Erik ten Hag that cost the team the disappointing defeat:

Starting the midfield trio of Fred Rodriguez, Casemiro and Christian Eriksen together

This could be seen as a test run from the Dutch tactician considering the fact that these midfield maestros have not started a game together since the new campaign kicked off, hence it was their first start together in competitive game which shouldn’t have been in a game like this when they hope to get on track with a winning momentum.

Opting for the central defence duo of Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof

Benching the the central defence duo of Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane was a great tactical mistake and wrong decision from the Dutch tactician considering the fact that the two defenders dropped to the bench have been enjoying a winning streaks, and have posed to be a solid and formidable pair since helping the team get their campaign back on track.

These two have not suffered a defeat when they both start at the defence line for Manchester United as compared to Harry Maguire who has now lost all three games which he has started so far this season, with the other four won without him in the starting XI line-up.
