NAFDAC workers reject management’s offer, insist strike continues

Members of the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria, National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control branch will continue their strike despite a meeting between them and the agency’s governing council,

The meeting, which was held in Abuja, had the acting chairman of the governing council, Dr Mufutau Yahaya, in attendance.

Others who attended the meeting are the Chairman, Pharmacists Council of Nigeria, Prof Ahmed Mora; representatives from the Standard Organisation of Nigeria and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, while the Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof Mojisola Adeyeye, joined the meeting via zoom.

Our correspondent learnt that the meeting, which was held on Wednesday, started at about 5pm and ended without any resolution.

The  governing board had a meeting over poor welfare with the union last Saturday but both parties could not reach a truce.

The MHWUN, NAFDAC branch had on June 22 embarked on an indefinite strike to press home its demands such as immediate approval of additional allowances for members of staff and full payment of 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021 promotion arrears, among others.

Speaking with our correspondent on Thursday, the secretary of the union, Ayodeji Adetoboye, reaffirmed the union’s resolve to continue its indefinite strike until the agency meets its demands.

“Where we are having a challenge now is that they don’t want to pay all the promotion arrears and we will not resume until they pay the promotion arrears and the hazards allowance,” he said.

NAFDAC’s Resident Media Consultant, Sayo Akintola, said, “I’m waiting for them to come up with their resolutions, that is when I will be briefed and I will then brief the media. By Friday or after the Sallah holiday, everybody will go back to work.”
