NANS is trying to get ASUU and the Government back on the bargaining table as Strike continues

[ad_1]

Students from the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) have pleaded with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) as well as the Federal Government to resume talks in an effort to end the ongoing strike.

The students’ group president, Umar Faruk, made the call on Thursday in Abuja, threatening to seize the Federal Ministry of Education if the problem was not resolved in the next few weeks.

The NANS administration also asked the federal government to set up visiting committees to deal with the problems of students who were kicked out of school for political reasons or were sent home.

Faruk said at a news conference that increasing the Ministry of Education’s budget to carry out UNESCO’s suggestions is a key step toward this goal.

He lamented that the strike action has kept students at home for the previous six months, saying that this is not good for a country that wants to develop and thrive.

Farouk also talked about how the unemployment rate was going up, how security was getting worse, and how there were problems with premium motor spirits.

He said, “Because of this, we won’t spend time making sure that our agenda is focused on getting students back to school as soon as possible.”

The current state of insecurity in Nigeria has made it impossible to avoid multi-stakeholder engagement through non-kinetic means. This calls for stronger engagement with the goal of getting Nigerian students involved in peace-building advocacy.

We need to find a long-term solution to the ongoing fuel problem, which has caused the prices of transportation, food, and other goods and services to go up. This is important for the growth of our economy and the well-being of our country.

Nigeria’s government needs to do more to help its economy grow and develop, especially since rising unemployment has slowed economic growth.

Due to the long-term effects of the strike, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has been on strike for over eight months, rendering the academic calendar useless as a measurement tool for students’ academic careers. The Nigerian student body has reached the limit of how much it can bend, and its members have promised to find a way to stop ASUU’s strike from making things worse and worse.

We thus call on the Federal Government, via the Ministry of Education, to end the ongoing ASUU strike as soon as possible within normal business hours. so that students may occupy the Ministry of Education until their demands are realized.

The report said, “The Federal Government should form visitation committees to solve the problems of all politically expelled and rusticated students, and all education stakeholders should be involved to make sure education gets the attention it needs by giving the Ministry of Education more money to meet the UNESCO proposal.”
