Nigeria may be stripped of CWG gold

Nigeria could be stripped of the gold medal in the women’s 4x100m relay at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham if an unnamed member of the quartet fails a doping test.

Tobi Amusan, Rosemary Chukwuma, Favour Ofili, and Grace Nwokocha made up the gold-winning team.

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria was informed of the development by the World Anti-Doping Agency, as the confirmation of the B sample is still pending.

If the athlete is not exonerated, the team will be stripped of the medal and performance.

The AFN‘s president, Tonobok Okowa, confirmed the report to Saturday PUNCH.

He stated that the federation had launched an investigation and would make its findings public.

“The letter from the World Anti-Doping Agency just arrived at the federation today (Friday), and we are shocked to hear this for the first time.” “We risk losing the gold medal we won in the 4x100m relay at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham,” Okowa told the News on Saturday.

“However, we will conduct our investigation,” she says, “and while an athlete is responsible for anything related to doping, this is not a positive development for us.”

The AFN president, on the other hand, refused to name the athlete involved, instead stating that the AFN would issue a public statement once the investigation was completed.

“No, I cannot reveal the athlete’s identity at this time because we need to confirm what happened and reach a conclusion on our findings before making a public statement.”

“The investigation is ongoing, and nothing has been confirmed.” “We have a notification letter,” AFN head coach Seigha Porbeni explained.

This comes just days after David Aya, a young high jumper, failed a drugs test at the World Athletics Junior Championships in Cali, Colombia, last month.
