Official: Lewandowski named as the Champions League Player of the Week

[ad_1]

Robert Lewandowski stole the show with a stunning hat-trick on his Champions League debut for his new club as Barcelona romped past Viktoria Plzen 5-1.

With the Polish captain standing out more than any other player at the start of Europe’s elite competition this season, it’s no surprise that his outstanding performance was recognized.

Following his heroics against the Czechs, Lewandowski was voted the best player from the first matchday of the 2022/23 Champions League campaign.

Aside from the hat-trick, it was the way he took his goals that distinguished the ex-Bayern striker from other possible contenders for the award, including Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland.

Lewandowski effortlessly curled the ball right into the bottom corner for his opener and the strike that sealed his treble. While his outstanding finishing was on display, the 34-year-old’s pinpoint positioning also stood out for his second goal, as he was perfectly positioned to head the ball home from a sublime Ousmane Dembele cross, before scoring a third goal from the edge of the box in the second half.

Overall, it is difficult to argue that any other player in the Champions League outperformed the evergreen goalscorer in the first gameweek.
