It was as if Real Madrid had foreseen the departure of Casemiro coming when it did, as the hierarchy made an expensive signing worth €100m in the transfer of Aurelien Tchouameni from Monaco in the summer, and one that has now proved very auspicious.
No sooner had Casemiro made his sojourn to Manchester United to begin a new challenge than Tchouameni was thrust into Carlo Ancelotti’s midfield mix in place of the departing legend, and four matches down the road, he has not disappointed.
In his first match against UD Almeria, he was somewhat nervous which was only natural considering the big role he was stepping into for the first time in a competitive game for the team.
However, since then he has gone from strength to strength, such that after his fourth game, all memories of the legendary Casemiro, whose role he had taken on, have faded in the memories of the Madridista, as they see a very capable and reliable replacement in Tchouameni.
Ancelotti admits that in the squad three players, Kroos, Camavinga, and Tchouameni were capable of filling the role of midfield anchor, which is consistent with Madrid’s 3-man midfield in a 4-3-3 system.
However, in a high-profile match and barring any injury, there is no doubt which of the midfield three that he would opt for as the pivot. So far, he has deployed Tchouameni in that position for the four La Liga matches Madrid had played in the absence of Casemiro, an indication that Ancelotti sees him as the like-for-like alternative to the latter, which he is.
His exploits playing as a defensive midfielder have earned Tchouameni plaudits from Ancelotti, who has used sobriquets like a wonderful midfielder, a highly focused player, and an incredible signing, to describe him, an indication of just how pleased his manager is to have him in the midfield.
Tchouameni’s stats which earned him a high rating in the match against Betis, and for which he was awarded man-of-the-match are noteworthy. On his offensive contributions, he made 92 touches even as the team’s anchor, the bulk of which was in the opponent’s half, second only to Sergio Canales.
Defensively, Tchouameni shone like a star, as he had a game-high 7 tackles, and 3 interceptions, and out of his 19 duels against Betis, he won 16.
These impressive stats prove that he has come to stay and would be looking to prove his mettle in his first Champions League outing for Madrid against Celtic on Tuesday
