PDP, APC foisted poverty on Nigerians – Katsina Labour Party chairman

The Katsina State Labour Party Chairman, Ibrahim Musawa, who is also the party’s governorship candidate in the state, in this interview with OLAIDE OYELUDE, says the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is more credible than the All Progressives Congress’ Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and the Peoples Democratic Party’s Atiku Abubakar

How popular is the Labour Party in Katsina State?

The Labour Party is very popular in Katsina State. The party is third in terms of popularity after the APC and the PDP. We have structures at all levels; from the ward to the local government and the state level. We are all there.

And when you consider the fact that many people in Katsina State have seen through the lies of the APC and the PDP, they rush to our party on a daily basis. The emergence of Peter Obi as our party’s presidential candidate has also warmed the hearts of many residents of Katsina State. We also have no fewer than 48 supporting groups, including House to House, POBA (Peter Obi and Baba Ahmed), and many others on our side, making the party a force to reckon with in the state.

The Labour Party does not have any members in the state House of Assembly, and in the Federal House of Representatives or the Senate. How do you relate this to your claim that the party is popular in Katsina State?

You know the APC currently has members at both the state house of assembly and the House of Representatives, while it has two members as senators. I can assure you that if the election is free and fair, all of this will change in 2023.

APC sold lies to the people of the state to convince them to be there since 2015, but as I said earlier, people have seen through the lies and are now eagerly waiting for the 2023 election to prove the party wrong.

For instance, the only landmark projects that you will see in the state now are those embarked on and completed by the former Governor Ibrahim Shema’s regime. The APC is only good at renovating structures and awarding unknown contracts.

The Labour Party currently has many decampees from the APC, especially those who left the party because of its lies and anti-people programmes.

So, our party waxes stronger in the state on a daily basis, and we are confident of victory at the general election.

How prepared is the Labour Party for the 2023 election in the state, and how would you describe the chances of your party in the election?

We are fully prepared. Our chances get brighter every day. The beauty of the current development in the state is that the people of the state see no difference between the APC and the PDP in terms of deceit. The people have now found solace in the Labour Party. I was the Labour Party governorship candidate in 2011, 2015, and 2019.

So, when one speaks about political developments in Katsina State, I know all the intrigues involved, and I can boldly say that the Labour Party has brighter chances at the forthcoming election. In the name of Allah, we shall succeed.

At the national level, our presidential candidate, Peter Obi is ahead of other presidential candidates when you talk of credibility. Is it the PDP candidate, who was a former Vice President to President Olusegun Obasanjo, Atiku Abubakar, that does not have issues concerning credibility while in government, or the APC presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, who did not have credibility problems while he was Lagos State governor? It is only my principal, the Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, who many Nigerians know does not have a credibility problem. Obi has even told Nigerians that he believes in the progress of Nigeria and the welfare of Nigerians. He has also assured that if he wins the presidential election, he would choose members of his cabinet on merit and not on a religious, political, or ethnic basis. All these have endeared the Labour Party more to the hearts of Nigerians, and I am confident that, by God’s grace, the Labour Party would win the general elections both in Katsina and at the federal level.”

Are you not surprised that Governor Aminu Masari said in a recent interview that he does not know your presidential candidate and declared that his party’s presidential candidate would win the 2023 presidential election?

Do you expect him not to sell and promote his party’s presidential candidate? The governor is entitled to his opinion just like you and I are entitled to ours. The fact still remains that the Labour Party’s presidential candidate has better credibility in the eyes of Nigerians than the presidential candidates of the APC and PDP.

Obi will win the election if it is free and fair, and I am imploring the Independent National Electoral Commission to ensure a credible, free and fair election. We should allow people’s votes to count at the election.

What are things that your party would do differently from others if it wins the 2023 general elections both in Katsina State and at the national level?

My principal, Peter Obi has said that if the Labour Party wins the presidential election, he would resolve the security challenges across Nigeria within his first two months in government. He has also assured that members of his cabinet would be selected from across all the political parties and would be based purely on merit and not on religion or where you come from.

He has also assured that he would attract more investments to Nigeria.

In short, he will run a programme that will cater for the majority of poor Nigerians, in line with the philosophy of the Labour Party.

Everybody knows that Katsina State currently has security challenges.

Unfortunately, the APC government that is currently in power in the state does not have the know-how to solve the problem. They are not doing the right things to solve the problem. You don’t resolve security challenges by donating vehicles. That is pure contract; you don’t solve security challenges by holding dialogue with terrorists. That is a contract, too, as some people are bound to benefit from it instead of assisting you.

The Labour Party has strategies to solve the security challenges in Katsina State, and I can assure you that once we are inaugurated into office after winning the 2023 election, it will take me just three months to resolve the challenge. I would not hold any dialogue with terrorists, but the state would be rid of terrorists within the first three months of my government in Katsina State. We have a blueprint for that already. We also have other programmes that would lift the state among the comity of states.

What will be your advice for the people of the state generally as the 2023 election approaches?

I will advise our people in the state to see the 2023 general election as an opportunity provided by democracy to liberate themselves from poverty and hardship that the governments of the PDP and APC have foisted on them in the state. Our people should come out enmasse and vote for the Labour Party.

The Labour Party is the party for every Nigerian, irrespective of your religion and your economic status. We should be orderly and observe all the rules and regulations guiding our participation in the election.’’
