PDP Crisis: BoT Chair Steps Down, Tambuwal’s Position In Party Threatened

The Chairman of the Board of Trustee (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Walid Jibrin, has resigned his position over the crisis rocking the party.

Walid said his resignation was to curb the crisis in the party and make sure that the presidential candidate of the party, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, emerges president in 2023.

At the Board of Trustee meeting that was currently taking place at the Party headquarters in Abuja, Senator Jibrin tendered his resignation.

Daily Trust has also learned that Aminu Tambuwal, the governor of Sokoto state and the chairman of the PDP Governors Forum, will be pressured to step down from his position to create room for the south in the party’s leadership.

Since Atiku’s nomination as the presidential candidate and the selection of Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa as his running mate, the PDP has been mired in a critical crisis.

In an effort to end the crisis, the supporters of Rivers state governor Nyesom Wike have been calling for Iyorchia Ayu, the party’s national chairman, to quit.

The BoT Chair and Governor Tambuwal, in particular, were reportedly persuaded to resign by party stakeholders from the North in order to include the South.

The National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the party, which is also scheduled to take place today, is anticipated to follow the BoT meeting. As of the time this report was filed, the BoT meeting was still going on.
