PDP crisis: Hope dims for reconciliation

[ad_1]

Hope of an end to the protracted crisis that has hit the  people democratic party (PDP) dimmed at the weekend.

The gulf between the camp of Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike and PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar appears to be widening.

According to The Nation, Wike’s supporters, sources said, may have foreclosed reconciliation with the Atiku camp.

It was learned that Wike and three other PDP governors in his camp—Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), and Samuel Ortom (Benue)—had left the nation over the weekend to discuss how best to move forward as a group.

They arrived back in the country yesterday.

The asymmetrical leadership structure of the main opposition party has been a point of contention between the two sides.

The Wike camp has requested that Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, the PDP National Chairman, quit in order to rectify the disparity and be replaced by a candidate from the Southwest.

Despite the current North-South divide, the Atiku camp, which is primarily composed of conservative Northern PDP members, has promised to keep Ayu as national chairman.

After the recent meeting in London between Atiku and Wike’s supporters, a party source who spoke with our correspondent on the phone yesterday claimed that the two camps had refused to change their positions.

“There has been no change since that meeting in London a few days ago, so there is no new information on the situation.

In actuality, we are unable to observe any encouraging indications of a compromise between the two sides. Instead, with reference to the National Chairman’s departure, the two parties are adamantly holding to their positions. So, such is the current scenario, the person added.

Some frightened party leaders fear that the PDP’s current circumstances could presage a repeat of the 2015 situation, in which unresolved internal strife resulted in high-profile defections to the then-opposition All Progressives Congress (APC).

A gentleman’s agreement to zone the party’s presidential ticket to the North was allegedly broken by four PDP governors who defected, according to their accusations.

Rotimi Amaechi (for the Rivers), Rabiu Kwankwaso (for Kano), Abdulfatah Ahmed (for Kwara), and Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto).

Atiku, Aminu Tambuwal, the former Speaker of the House of Representatives, and Bukola Saraki were other defections.

But according to the source, Wike and his supporters may be too late to leave the PDP at this point.

The Rivers governor and his supporters may stay in the PDP and campaign against Atiku’s victory from within, according to the source, who did not want his identity made public.

The source added that the Wike camp believes PDP has very little chance of winning the 2023 presidential election.

The Rivers governor and his allies, he continued, are more worried about their political future beyond 2023 since they don’t anticipate Atiku and the PDP winning the election.

“Some circumstances have altered the political landscape this time around, so much so that even Atiku and the PDP leaders are uncertain of their chances in 2023.

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) Kwankwaso and Peter Obi’s participation in the contest has decreased the PDP’s chances of winning compared to what they did in the 2019 election.
