Peter Obi Surpasses Atiku, Tinubu As Google Trends’ Most-searched Topic.

From Monday, August 1, to Wednesday, August 31, Google Trends searches have shown tendencies that may play out in the upcoming election.

In August, Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Labour Party, is once again the most-searched topic on Google Trends. Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) trailed behind Obi and Bola Tinubu.

Remember that in August, the three candidates for president met in London with the leaders of their political parties and other important people.

After the London summit, all of the candidates were “trending” on Twitter for days, which made people talk about them on social media.

Google Trends provides insights into the public’s interest in the candidates, why they are searching for them, and where they are looking. Most conversations about the candidates on social media were started by their supporters to promote them and say bad things about other candidates.

Pulse reported in July that Obi topped the list of Nigerians’ Google Trends searches in the first half of 2022.

Still, a comparison of how people searched for the candidates on Google Trends from Monday, August 1, to Wednesday, August 31, showed some things that could happen in the presidential election in February 2023.

During the time period under consideration, Peter Obi has received a greater number of searches than Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Atiku Abubakar.

On Saturday, August 13, for example, public interest in Obi increased by 100 percent.

Pulse found that Obi’s claim that Sambisa is twice as big as Israel was the reason for the increase in searches about him.

After checking the facts, as expected, many Nigerians criticised the presidential candidate for making a false claim.

On Wednesday, August 10, 2022, there was an increase in the number of searches for Tinubu. The increase happened because Obi’s campaign staff told his supporters to be careful on social media.

But on Monday, August 29, 2022, people were most interested in Atiku Abubakar, even though Obi and Tinubu had been the most searched-for names all month.

At the time, the only reason there was more interest in the former Vice President was because he went to Kano State and met with Ibrahim Shekarau, who had left the New Nigeria Peoples Party and joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The location of searchers is another important piece of information that the search engine has.

The South-South and South-East parts of the country were where most Obi searches came from.

Kogi, Plateau, Sokoto, Benue, and Kwara states accounted for a sizeable proportion of his searches in the North.

In Lagos and Ogun, however, he was not as popular as Tinubu, whose search terms made up 40% and 47% of all queries during the time period studied.

The most people looked for Tinubu, who used to be the governor of Lagos, in six states in the South-West, including Lagos.

In the northern states of Bauchi, Kebbi, Zamfara, and Gombe, searches for Tinubu eclipsed those for Atiku.

Tinubu shared significant search percentages with Atiku in the states of Nasarawa, Kano, and Kaduna.

Tinubu and Obi both had 0% of searches in Jigawa state, so it’s interesting that Atiku seems to be the only candidate there.

Atiku also has a larger percentage of searches in the states of Yobe, Adamawa, Kebbi, Sokoto, and Kano.

His search term also turned up interesting results in the states of Borno, Gombe, Kaduna, Ekiti, and Kogo.

This information supports, to some extent, the idea that the leading candidates in the 2023 election may become a fight between tribes.
