Reactions As PDP Chieftain, Lere Olayinka Shares Alleged Result Of 1979 Election Won By Alhaji Shehu Shagari

With barely six months to the much-anticipated 2023 general elections, reactions have begun trailing a document posted on social media by Ekiti State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chieftain and House of Rep candidate, Lere Olayinka, showing the outcome of the 1979 election that saw the late Alhaji Shehu Shagari emerge as Nigeria’s first democratically elected president.

The document, which was posted on Lere Olayinka’s Facebook page a few hours ago, also shows a breakdown of how votes were cast from a total of 19 States across the federation. Quite interestingly, the 1979 election was a hot contest between Chief Nnamdi Azikiwe from the Southeast, Chief Obafemi Awolowo of the Southwest, Alhaji Shehu Shagari, Aminu Kano, and Ibrahim Waziri who were from the North.

As expected, the document drew a flurry of reactions from some Nigerians who trooped to the comments section to air their opinions.

While some persons pointed out that the three main candidates, Awolowo, Azikiwe, and Shagari all got major votes from their respective regions (Southwest, Southeast, and North Central), others, however, noted that the Southeast once boasted of a large voting bloc that matched that of the North.
