Casemiro left European champions Real Madrid last summer for €81.3 million to join Europa League rivals Manchester United. David Alaba understands why he left the club.
Casemiro developed at Real Madrid into one of the world’s best, if not the best, defensive midfielders with the ball, winning five trophies after his first move from Sao Paulo in 2013.
There is no chance of a sixth place finish this season, as United finished sixth last season and only qualified for the Europa League. Although the Brazilian will double his wages at Old Trafford, Alaba believes he simply wanted a new challenge.
“A year ago I was in the same situation and we talked a lot about it,” the former Bayern Munich player told Goal.com ahead of Real’s Champions League Group F clash with Celtic in Glasgow.
“After nine years at Real Madrid, he was looking for a new challenge. I wish him every happiness from the bottom of my heart.”
Casemiro hasn’t started yet
Casemiro has yet to start a game for United, as Scott McTominay shone as the Red Devils went on a run of four wins, including victories against Liverpool and Arsenal.
But he is expected to make his debut in the Europa League Group E clash against Real Sociedad on Thursday, and the 30-year-old can’t wait to get going.
“I feel like I’m 20 or 18 years old, I’m ready, I’m excited to be among my teammates, to play in the stadium, and I think it’s a huge excitement and I’m just really happy.”
Real defeated Celtic 3-0 on Tuesday, and Aurelien Tchouameni – a €100 million new acquisition from Monaco – shone in midfield alongside Casemiro‘s old team-mates Luka Modric and Toni Kroos. When he left in the 71st minute, he was replaced by another French prodigy, Eduardo Camavinga.
