Report: Chelsea break EPL transfer window record on new players in a single season

The summer transfer window is now in the history books, and Chelsea have broken the record for the most money spent of any team in Premier League history. The West London side spent a total of £254 million on their signings, and recuperated £44.37 million in permanent sales.

In the first transfer window under the new ownership, Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali have gone all-out to acquire Thomas Tuchel’s transfer targets. They were behind in terms of their plans for the summer due to the takeover, and had to spend more to make up for the delay.

“We can discuss endlessly if we overspent or if it’s too much money for the players but the players that we got are very, very good players and very good personalities. Everything was needed to rebuild the group and inspire the group and I think we did excellent, excellent signings,” Thomas Tuchel said about the massive spending.

“It does not help if we talk about the prices too much because we’ll always find people and it’s maybe hard to argue when they say it’s way too much money – okay. This is how the market was for us. Maybe we were not in the perfect position to find always the right timing and the right price. But this was nobody’s fault, this was because of the situation, but the players we got fit perfectly and I’m very happy to work with this group now.”

Raheem Sterling became the first signing for the club under the new ownership, joining for £45 million. Kalidou Koulibaly, who has been linked with Chelsea for years, was next. He joined for a fee worth £35 million.

Wesley Fofana is the most expensive arrival for the club with a price tag of £75 million. Marc Cucurella became the most expensive left-back in the Premier League, with a £63 million move.

Chelsea also spent a considerable amount on young players, with Gabriel Slolina, Carney Chukuemeka, Cesare Casadei and Omari Hutchinson joining the club as part of their future project.

On deadline day, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Denis Zakaria joined the club to complete the line-up. And now that Tuchel has the players he wants, he needs to focus on getting the results in the pitch with a competitive season ahead.
