Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, a former Chief Security Officer under the late Head of State Gen. Sani Abacha, claimed on Friday that he had been subjected to torture because of his allegiance to Nigeria.
Al-Mustapha, who made this claim during an appearance on the Channels Television programme Politics Today, declined to reveal the identities of those who tortured him in exchange for his countryman devotion.
The murder of Alhaja Kudirat Abiola, the wife of the widely acclaimed victor of the June 12, 1993, presidential election, MKO Abiola, and other atrocities committed by the Abacha regime, led to the imprisonment of the former CSO for a number of years by the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
Al Mustapha, the Action Alliance’s presidential candidate for the 2023 elections, declared on the show that he was willing to die for Nigeria.
The former military officer affirmed that he had no regrets about his time spent under Abacha and claimed that the late dictator had implemented effective measures to keep Nigeria going.
Al-Mustapha insisted that he was vying for the presidency because of his love for Nigeria.
He said: “I care for Nigeria. I am not here for the money.”
