Strike: ASUU constitutes 7-man Committee to defend union

[ad_1]

THE Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has constituted a seven-man committee to defend the union’s position and refusal to suspend the ongoing strike that is getting to seven months.

The committee is expected to respond to any criticisms in the media against the alleged adamant posture of the university teachers to suspend the strike.

Recall that on February 14, 2022, ASUU declared a one-month warning strike and has been extending it ever since. As a result, academic activities in Nigeria‘s public universities have been suspended.

The three other university-based unions have postponed their own strikes after reaching settlements with the government, despite the fact that they withdrew their services in March of this year over unresolved concerns with the federal government that were quite similar to the ASUU’s demands.

The National Association of Academic Technologists, NAAT, the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions, SSANU, and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, have all opted to resume work. According to vanguard.

Renegotiation of the 2009 agreements, the alleged inconsistencies caused by the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System, IPPIS, the non-payment of earned allowances, payment of arrears of the National Minimum Wage, and the release of white papers on visitation panel reports are just a few of the demands made by the four unions that sparked the strike.

The two non-teaching staff unions of SSANU and NASU advocated the replacement of IPPIS with the University Peculiar Personnel Payroll System, or U3PS, while ASUU built its preferred payment platform, the University Transparancy Accountability Solution, or UTAS.

While the three non-teaching staff members have accepted the offer from the federal government, ASUU has persisted in claiming that the conditions have not been satisfactorily met.

A cross section of Nigerians who believed that the strike had gone on for too long and should be suspended in the interest of the students appear to be reacting negatively to the purported strong attitude of ASUU and offering depressing remarks.

The union has established a seven-member committee to address any perceived attacks on its position in response to the purported unfavourable reactions from the public and the criticism it is receiving for not stopping the strike.

Prof. Emmanuel Osadeke, the National President of ASUU, has written to Prof. Ade Adejumo, the Convener at the Lagos State University of Technology, LAUTEC, to refute any media reports that would be detrimental to the union’s interests.

Members were informed in a letter dated September 1st with the subject line “Constitution of Rapid Response Committee” that their dedication to seeing the assignment through would be greatly appreciated.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) was at a crucial point in its fight for the continuation of public universities in Nigeria, the letter stated. It has been noted that there is a significant amount of media propaganda being used to misinform and defame the union. The union was grateful for your efforts in addressing this media conflict.

“The trustees and main executives of the union resolved to establish a quick reaction committee to immediately address various media articles, opinions, interviews, etc. that may be contrary to the union’s interests.”

The letter lists the following persons as members: Prof. Ade Adejumo (LAUTEC), convener; Prof. Joseph A. Ushie (UNIUYO); Prof. Abdulgafar Amoka (ABU); Dr. Adelaja Odukoya (UNILAG); Dr. Taiwo Obateru (UNIJOS); Dr. Otu Otu Akanu (AE-FUNAI); and Prof. Victor Igbum (BSU), secretary

It concluded, “Your dedication to this assignment as in the past would be greatly appreciated.”
