Strike to continue as Nigerian govt, ASUU meeting ends in stalemate

by Ebor Cletus Ralph Jr

On Tuesday in Abuja, a meeting between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) came to a standstill.

The National Universities Commission (NUC) offices in Abuja hosted a meeting between union leaders and a federal government renegotiation team chaired by Prof. Nimi Briggs, but the parties were unable to come to a consensus on how to terminate the six-month strike.
Journalists were informed by one of the ASUU representatives present at the meeting that no new offers had been made by the committee.

He continued by saying that the committee asked the varsity lecturers to call off the strike and pledged that the union’s requests will be incorporated into the 2023 budget.

ASUU embarked on a 30-day warning strike on February 14 over the federal government’s failure to honour the agreement signed by both parties.

The union’s demands include reviewing the lecturers’ condition of service every five years, revitalisation of public universities, and adoption of University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) as an alternative to the Integrated Payroll and Personal Information System (IPPIS) for payment of members’ salaries, among others.

ASUU extended the strike for another 30 days last week, the fourth since the industrial action began six months ago.
